Design of paddles and safety aids for open ocean kayaks is not well known. We think that this aspect of sea kayaking has been largely neglected by current sea kayakers. The Inuit and Aleutian peoples used unfeathered narrow paddles. They carried storm paddles. They carried flotation bladders made from seal. These items were not ornamental items but were items of kit essential for survival. We looked to the past for design, and have created a range of simple, robust and easily deployed products. We are proud of our products, and hope that the sea kayaking community finds them useful. Kayaking and kayak design has evolved over the centuries. Much has been incorporated into modern design, and much has been forgotten or overlooked. Steve and I hold that kayak design for the open ocean kayak reached a pinnacle during the period 1970 to the early 1990's. We are unlikely to greatly improve on the kayaks of those times. There are three categories of sea kayaks.
We build only open ocean kayaks. And we build only the elite kayaks, and the kayaks that interest us. We are not a volume kayak manufacturer. We own Necky factory molds for the Tofino, the Arluk III, and the Kyook. These are all open ocean kayaks of the golden period. Steve is a kayak designer and builder. If Steve is ever completely happy with his latest craft ( an annoying perfectionist) then we will build a mold and add it to our range. |
